Cabling and Bracing

The purpose of cabling and bracing is to add support to heavy/decayed limbs, trees with compromised bases or soil structures, or codominant stems as they'll have included bark in the union which is a weak attachment and prone to failure.

Forms of Support

Cabling

The use of high tensile strength cable or synthetic lines to aid long, heavy, or damaged/decaying limbs. Can also be used to support wide spread canopy leaders that constantly face high wind speeds.

Bracing

Codominant stems have what's called "Included bark", which is a weak union where the 2 stems join. A brace can help prevent the splitting of these stems at the union by installing steel rods, keeping the tops stable together.

Guying

Guy wires serve the tree much like they do powerline poles in that they are ground based supports to help prevent a tree from falling over. While it's not a common form of support, it certainly has it's useful situations.
